We’re into the New Year but the coldest days of winter are still ahead of us. So why not hunker down against the cold and watch winter films with your kids? After all, it’s National Popcorn Day soon!
It’s past Christmas, so we’ve cut out the festive classics in our list of snow-bound winter movies your children will love. Check out our top six…
Cool Runnings (1993)
Based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team that competed at the 1988 Winter Olympics, this laugh-a-minute comedy stars the late John Candy. When sprinter Derice Bannock (Leon) fails to qualify for the Summer Games in Seoul, he turns his talents to winter sports instead. He’s just got to convince a team to join him – and sponsors that he’s serious. We’re not going to lie, it’s silly and a little rude. But that’s why the kids will love it.
Rise of the Guardians (2012)
An animated adventure that has Jack Frost as one of the heroes – alongside Santa Claus. But this isn’t a Christmas movie. Instead it’s a rip-roaring adventure that sees Santa and his allies the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy enlist Jack to help them defeat the malevolent Pitch Black, who is striving to engulf the world. Exciting action, engaging characters and a Father Christmas who kicks butt make this an enduring family favourite. Features the voice talents of Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law.
Happy Feet (2006)
Emperor Penguins sing to their soulmates. But Happy Feet (Elijah Wood) is tone deaf. And in this CGI adventure, he lets his feet do the talking. Spectacular Busby Berkeley-style dance numbers (with penguins) abound in a sweet family flick with a sensational soundtrack that’s one of those winter films that stands up to repeat viewings. Also stars Hugh Jackman and the late Brittany Murphy.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode V of George Lucas’s sci-fi saga is the fans’ favourite. And the first third features some spectacular snow scenes that are thrilling as well as chilling. Watch Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) battle a Wompa snow beast, then take on the evil Empire’s AT-AT walkers in his snowspeeder, while back at the base Han Solo (Harrison Ford) has cinema’s coolest ever reaction to the word “I love you.”
Snow Buddies (2008)
Prepare for cute and cuddly in this wonder winter movie. Five Labrador pups find themselves lost in Alaska and then competing in a cross-country dogsled race. With James Belushi providing one of the voices, this is a Disney treat that’s big on wise-cracking laughs as well as cuteness.
And, of course …
Frozen (2013)
Two princesses. One curse. A sled-load of great tunes. One stone-cold Disney classic. Winter movies don’t get much better than this.
