Holiday activity camps offer a huge range of exciting opportunities for children to explore, learn, and have fun. However, the novelty and variety of activities, along with the prospect of meeting new people, can also make it a little daunting, especially for children who may be attending the camp for the first time.
We understand children (and parents) may feel a little anxious starting their holiday camp.
Being in an entirely new environment, with unfamiliar surroundings and people, can be overwhelming for some children.
Trying out different and new activities can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Some children may feel anxious about not being good at certain activities or unsure about what to expect.
Meeting new people and making friends can be challenging, particularly for kids who are naturally shy or introverted.
The camp's different routine and schedule can disrupt the familiarity of their daily life, which might lead to some unease.
For children attending camp for the first time, being away from their parents or guardians can cause separation anxiety.
Every child is different, some go racing in barely a kiss goodbye or a brief backwards glance, and others find it a little harder to settle in. They like to take it all in and may hold back to begin with.
But you need not worry, we've seen it all, and are here to help you and your child to feel safe and secure in this new environment and most importantly have fun!
We’ve been running the UK's favourite activity day camp for over 30 years now so know a thing or two about helping children feel at ease with us, relax, have fun and thrive!
The camp staff understands that each child is unique, and they are trained to handle the varying emotions children may experience when attending camp for the first time. They take the time to make both the child and the parents feel at ease.
Staff members ensure the child is familiar with the camp venue, the program, and other staff members.
Each child is assigned a Keyworker or Group Leader who becomes a point of contact and support for them during their time at camp. This individual gets to know the child's individual needs and interests, making the child feel more secure and cared for.
To foster inclusivity and help children feel more included, a buddy system is often used. Children can be paired with a friend, which helps them settle in more quickly and create connections with others.
Group activities like 'Name' and 'Get to know you' circle games are organized during registration periods. These activities encourage children to participate and interact, allowing them to feel immediately involved with their group. A chance for them to relax and have fun in their new environment.
The welfare of the child is the primary concern of the camp. All our seasonal staff members have enhanced DBS checks, undergo training in our policies and procedures, including safety, hygiene, safeguarding and managing children's behaviour. Our younger groups are led by Early Years trained members of staff and we have area managers and trained head office staff to support camps too. The camp venue is carefully assessed for suitability, and daily Risk Assessments are completed to ensure the children's well-being during various activities.
Kids are given the opportunity to choose from a variety of activities each day. This empowers them to be in control of their day, creating a sense of comfort and predictability. Trying out new activities with other children helps them bond and develop lasting friendships.
As the days go by, children's confidence tends to grow significantly at camp. Parents often observe a positive change in their child's demeanour from the nervousness at the beginning to the excitement to return each day. This newfound confidence can also translate to easier transitions in other aspects of their lives, such as starting a new school.
Barracudas holiday activity camps provide a nurturing environment for kids to explore new activities, build social skills, and gain confidence. With the support of the camp staff and the camaraderie of fellow campers, children quickly find their groove and thoroughly enjoy the camp experience.
