There might not be any lovely lunches out this mothers day, but we've got some great ideas for Mothers Day at home.
Just have a look through our Mother’s Day activity ideas and spend quality time together on the special day.
Make a photo frame
Feed your inner Blue Peter presenter with this Mother’s Day craft idea.
You’ll need two pieces of card, a glue stick, coloured pens and pencils and any glitter, tissue paper and art supplies you have to hand.
We can bet you’ve got a lovely picture of you and your child kicking about the house that you keep forgetting to frame. Well, make it even more personal by letting your kid get arty by designing one for you.
You’ll need two identical pieces of card, one for the front and one for the rear. Position your photo in the middle of the top sheet and carefully mark its edges. Inside the rectangle you’ve marked, draw a slightly smaller rectangle – about 5mm would be ideal.
Carefully cut out the smaller shape. If your child’s scissor skills are up to it, let them do it themselves – believe us, you’ll love those wobbly lines in years to come.
Now, on the side opposite the one you’ve drawn on, let your child go wild! They can draw, colour, glue, paint, scrawl – whatever. You are going to love the results.
Has young Picasso finished? Make a sandwich with the photo as the “filling” between the cardboard “bread” and stick it together.
There’s only one place good enough to hang this queen of Mother’s Day crafts for kids – the fridge door!
Family film fun
Who doesn’t love snuggling up under a cosy blanket, their child under one arm and a box of chocs in their lap? Make a mother day film session a real occasion... get your comfy's on, drinks and snacks at hand, close the curtains and turn the lights down and settle in!
How about a family movie on the couch? Everybody loves a Disney film – so find a family favourite and laugh and sing along. It’s a guaranteed fun activity for kids.
Maybe you’re more into CGI blockbusters. Older kids might be more enthusiastic about an action packed Superhero hit, or kids spy film. Whatever they're into your bound to find something to entertain you all with all the options available to stream right now.
Top tip: Make the movie choice the night before – no one wants an argument in the middle of their Mother’s Day.
Have a garden picnic
This is one of the hassle-free fun filled days for all the family – and, weather permitting, it’s one of the Mother’s Day things to do that the children will love.
Rope the kids in to help you make sandwiches. Keep it simple with family favourites such as ham and cheese, egg mayo, or cheese and pickle.
Make it authentic and pack up the basket with some fruit, packet of biscuits, some crisps and bottles of water and head out with a picnic rug. Why not have yourself a mini garden games tournament just to add in some extra excitement?
Turn the kitchen into a kid-chen
Ah, the dreaded breakfast in bed, followed by clearing up the disaster zone the kids have created while crafting your toast and Marmite. Let’s skip that … and get them to join you in the kitchen, instead, in this tastiest of Mother’s Day activity ideas.
Let’s keep it simple and healthy – then you won’t have to worry about the cake you’ve bought for afters. How about a salad for lunch? Keep it easy with bagged leaves. Young kids can snip up the likes of spring onions and even peppers with kitchen scissors, while older children can learn some skills at the chopping board, slicing and dicing tomatoes, grilled chicken breast, crispy bacon … whatever takes your fancy.
Even making a simple dressing can be a fun activity for kids. Vinaigrette is three parts oil to one part vinegar, plus salt and pepper. They can measure the ingredients into a sealable container, click the lid shut and give it a good shake, while they sing the chorus of their favourite song. Job done.
Everything clean and cut? Kids set the table? Well, sit down and let your children get all Gordon Ramsay on their presentation.
Best of all, you can keep an eye on them doing the dishes while you sip a glass of wine – just remember to wash any sharp knives yourself first.
Dig out the disco ball
It’s the one day of the year that you’ve got control of the telly remote. So hide it and have a disco instead. Channel your inner Sophie Ellis-Bexter and get the lights out, the curtains closed, dig out the disco ball and have one of your favourite fun filled days.
Kids love to throw some shapes and the exercise will make the whole family smile. There are plenty of Mother’s Day playlists on Spotify to suit all tastes, whether you want some cheesy choons or songs with a motherly theme.
And the bonus? This Mother’s Day activity will tire out the kids – you might even get them to bed early.
Whatever your plans are - have a great day and remember what an amazing Mum you are!
