Its’s raining cats and dogs, and all your lovely outdoor summer plans have been cancelled... need a few ideas?
British summertime always serves up a mixed bag of weather for us to enjoy, you can guarantee that the weekend you're hosting the family BBQ it will be raining and in true British style it will be 1 lone chef outside under an umbrella with a beer!
Luckily at Barracudas holiday camps we are well versed in being prepared for all the weather and have plenty of rainy-day activities on offer to keep the kids, entertained, engaged and moving throughout the day.
If you’re not feeling like getting all the wet weather gear on first thing or are looking for a cosy afternoon then we have a few ideas for you to keep your little ones entertained!
Lay out a blanket, pack some sandwiches, snacks, and drinks, and have an indoor picnic in your living room. It's a fun way to change things up and create a cosy atmosphere.
Gather around the table and play board games or work on a jigsaw puzzle. Choose games that are suitable for all ages and interests.
Set up a creative station with art supplies like paints, markers, coloured paper, and more. You can work on individual projects or collaborate on a family art piece.
Pick a theme or a series of movies and have a movie marathon. Don't forget the popcorn and blankets for a cinematic experience at home.
Get everyone involved in the kitchen, cooking or baking something delicious together. It's a great opportunity to teach kids about different recipes and cooking techniques. It doesn’t have to be just cakes and biscuits either, flatbreads and pasta are very tasty things to make with the family!
Use blankets, pillows, and furniture to build forts in your living room. Once the forts are ready, you can spend time reading stories, playing games, or just hanging out.
Find simple and safe science experiments you can do at home. From making slime to creating homemade volcanoes, these hands-on activities can be both educational and entertaining. Try these.
Sit in a circle and take turns creating a collaborative story. Alternatively, encourage family members to write their own stories or journals during the rainy day.
Explore the world's museums and cultural sites online through virtual tours. Many famous museums offer virtual experiences that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.
Have a karaoke session where each family member can pick their favourite songs to sing. It's a great way to go crazy and get rid of some of that extra energy and have some laughs.
Create a DIY spa day by setting up relaxing activities like painting nails, doing face masks, and giving each other gentle massages (hopefully you get a look in too and can relax for a few minutes!).
Create a mini obstacle course using household items like cushions, chairs, and hula hoops. Time each other and see who can complete the course the fastest.
Choose a book that everyone can read, and then have discussions about it. This is a great way to promote reading with the children and spark interesting conversations.
Explore online classes or workshops that interest your family. This could be anything from art classes to cooking lessons or even learning a new language.
And when you really need to get out in the fresh air, what's more fun that chucking on the wellies and raincoats and going for a big puddle bashing walk!
Remember rainy day activities can be fun, energetic, and entertaining. If the kids have extra energy to burn, get them moving! If they (or you) need to get outside and get some fresh air, then get the coats on and embrace the great outdoors whatever the weather. You can always come home to dry off with a hot choccy 😉
