More activities 'should be offered to kids to persuade them to ditch the TV'

Summary: One Olympic gold medallist has indicated children need to be given the opportunity to participate in more activities.

Children need to be offered more activities other than school sports to coax them away from the television, one expert has suggested.
Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent said some kids prefer to stay indoors as they feel as though they have already tried a range of activities.
"If you can get them hooked with the idea of, 'OK, we're going to try this or experiment with this', then you might begin to get them on the right path," he added.
He also noted there are an array of sports youngsters can take up, including the traditional ones such as football, swimming and cricket.
However, Pinsent recommended a range of more eclectic pastimes like snowboarding, kite buggying, scuba diving and paintballing.
The specialist's comments come as Nestle launch the Get Set, Get Free campaign, designed to give families the chance to have a go at sports they have never tried before.
Britons will be able to have free lessons by collecting and redeeming vouchers from Nestle products.
