Swimming 'a great children's activity'

Finding activities for children that are both fun and cheap can be difficult, one journalist has admitted, but swimming fulfils both requirements.

Writing for the Guardian, Gaby Hinsliff said taking youngsters to the pool is something that has been around for years and has not lost its charm.

Ms Hinsliff was testing cost-effective ways of entertaining her son Freddie and opted for a new activity each day.

She noted that swimming cost her just £3.80 for a session and so can be enjoyed by children and parents who are on a budget.

Another activity trialled by the writer was gardening, which she noted was "wildly popular" with the youngster as it "mostly means throwing dirt about", while also being kind on the pocket.

Earlier this month, Ben West of the Ramblers recommended walking as a good value-for-money activity for children, with the expert suggesting it boosts fitness levels and family communication.
