Walking is a value-for-money activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family, according to one organisation.

The Ramblers suggested the activity is an affordable way to boost fitness levels among parents and their children.

Ben West from the establishment remarked: "Kids and parents also get so engrossed in discovering and playing that they don't realise how far they've walked and how much exercise they've done."

He added mums and dads have told him group walking is a great way to communicate with their offspring, while getting physical and boosting fitness levels.

Research commissioned by the Ramblers revealed families spend more quality time with each other when they carry out activities such as walking.

The activity also helps individuals of all ages get the exercise they need.

Meanwhile, associate editor at mumsnet Catherine Hanly recently suggested parents should persuade their kids to walk to school rather than get a lift as it has health and social benefits.
