Children 'should try new activities to tackle obesity'

A Liverpool dad has suggested children should try new activities and play more sport to combat being overweight.

It comes as a spokesman from the city's council said they are "considering" banning the word obesity.

The dad of two told the Daily Mail: "Eating unhealthy food and not taking part in physical activity should be stigmatised so that children live a healthy, active life."

His comments follow a debate by the Liverpool Schools Parliament, which is made up of 90 youngsters aged between nine and 11 years old.

The thought the word could de-motivate over-weight kids and they want the words "unhealthy weight" to be used instead.

Recently Dr Oriel Sullivan, an Oxford University sociologist, said research shows parents are spending more time taking part in activities with their children, the Daily Telegraph reported.

She found dads spend around half an hour a day with their offspring compared to just three to eight minutes back in the seventies.
